Description
Cymbopogon citratus, Poaceae family.
Cymbopogon flexuosus, also called Cochin Grass or Malabar Grass.
Perennial herb with long, sharp leaves grown as medicinal and culinary plant from India to the West Indies, Africa and naturalized in South America. The leaves are traditionally used to treat digestive disorders, fever, insomnia and stress. They contain citral, geraniol, myrcene, folic acid and B vitamins. For topical application or diffusion Citronella is a well-known natural insect repellent whose mosquito repellent qualities have been verified by research.
It is also held to be a muscular relaxant and to have analgesic properties. Research is currently being carried out for possible hypoglycaemic and anti-cancer properties.

Preparation
2 or 3 g per cup (a pinch) in a light decoction for 1 min followed by a 3 min infusion. Drink 1 cup after meals. A pinch of dried lemongrass leaves will also pleasantly flavour your Asian dishes in combination with ginger and coconut. Perfect for marinades or in green mint tea.
Properties and beneficial combinations
- aids digestion: infuse 5 g (1 large pinch) of peppermint for 10 min for a warm and lemony flavour at the end of the meal.
- combats fatigue: infuse 5 g (1 large pinch) of peppermint for 10 min and drink 1 cup in the morning and 1 at noon for a tonic effect on mind and body.
