Description

Rubus spectabilis, is a species of brambles in the Rosaceae family.

There are over a hundred species of brambles, a thorny perennial shrub, found on fallow lands. The leaves are trifoliate and the flowers are 2–3 cm long with five pinkish-purple petals; Salmonberries are edible and share the fruit structure of the raspberry.

Salmonberry leaves contain tannins, flavonoids and organic acids and are traditionally used to treat oral irritations, wounds, menstrual disorders, mild diarrhoea, diabetes.

Preparation 

For infusions, add 2 g of leaves (1 teaspoonful) per cup, infuse 10 min and drink 3 cups per day. In decoction, 10 g (1 large pinch ) per cup. Gargle, use as a mouthwash or as a poultice.

Properties and beneficial combinations

- as a demulcent for oral irritations: make an infusion of mallow flowers, 2 g (1 tsp) per cup, infuse for 10 minutes and combine with a salmonberry decoction. Use to gargle and as a mouthwash twice per day.  

- as a family tonic tea: 2 g blackberry leaves and 2 g salmonberry leaves per cup, infused for 10 minutes. Drink 3 cups a day. This infusion is traditionally used to soothe menstrual pains and haemorrhoids.
